The Handmade Photograph: Contemporary Photographers Working in Historic Processes

A Call for Entry presented by Bostick & Sullivan Jurored by Christopher James Bostick & Sullivan is proud to announce our first ever call-for-entry. Our upcoming juried exhibition will feature modern photographers’ handmade prints working with historic and alternative photographic printing methods. Digital means are allowed to capture the photograph and negative, but the prints submitted must be handmade. Silver gelatin is accepted as well. We welcome the chance to see how contemporary photographers work with these processes to convey their artful expressions to the world.

Important Dates February 28th, 2019-midnight MDT, deadline for submissions March 18th, 2019- announcement of selected Artists April 23rd, 2019- deadline for framed prints to arrive at Bostick & Sullivan June 7th -July 27th, 2019- exhibition on display June 14, 2019, 5-7pm- Reception Exhibition Location El Museo Cultural – 555 Camino de la Familia. In the Railyard Art District, Santa Fe, New Mexico Eligibility Open to all photographers internationally making historic and alt-process handmade photographs. No digital prints are eligible. You may use a digital negative. Prints including the frame can not exceed 20X24 inches over all. About the Juror Christopher James University Professor / Director, MFA in Photography and Integrated Media Lesley University, Cambridge, MA

Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose photographs, paintings, and alternative process printmaking have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, George Eastman House, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art-Boston. Represented by the Lee Witkin Gallery in New York City for over two decades he has also shown at Pace-McGill (NYC), Contrasts Gallery (London), Michelle Chomette (Paris), Hartje Gallery (Berlin), and Photokina (Germany). He has published extensively including Aperture, Camera (Switzerland), American Photographer, Solstice (for short fiction), and Interview magazine and in books such as The Antiquarian Avant Garde, á Prova de Aguà: Waterproof, Human Documents, and Handcrafted: The Art and Practice of the Handmade Print (China). All three editions of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes have received international critical acclaim and are universally recognized by artists, curators, historians, and educators as the definitive text in the genre of alternative process photography and photographically integrated media. A significantly expanded 900 page / 700 image, 3rd edition was published in 2015. Christopher, after 13 years at Harvard University, is presently University Professor and Director of the MFA in Photography program at Lesley University College of Art and Design. He received his undergraduate degree from Massachusetts College of Art and his masters from the Rhode Island School of Design and is also a painter, graphic designer, author, and a professional scuba diver. In the summer, he offers customized alternative process workshops in his Dublin, NH studio.
