Every two years my home state of Colorado hosts The Month of Photography, a biennial festival dedicated to the photographic arts. Founded and directed by photographer Mark Sink, The Month of Photography (also known as MoP) engages with galleries and museums in Denver and the surrounding areas to host photography exhibitions and public events throughout March and April.

I have been offered a wealth of opportunities to share my work in this year’s celebration. Information about these upcoming events is listed below; all events are open to the public.

The photographs in UNDERCURRENTS have been described as “taking the temperature” of the United States.

Traveling by car and looking for images is a bit like eavesdropping on a conversation or looking through a stranger’s window. Without staying in a place for a period of time it is impossible to gain a deep understanding of the issues facing a community. However, it is possible to document visual clues that offer insight about the state of a place, the concerns of the residents and the hopes and sometimes failed dreams of those inhabitants. One universal theme encountered in every state is patriotism, expressed in different ways, by the use of red, white and blue.

Goldstein’s art practice includes a history of addressing political issues through images and installation. Many of the photographs in UNDERCURRENTS are inherently political. This is not an exhibit about the current President and administration, but many of the images tell part of the story of how the country has become so fractured and divided. Ironically the subjects in some of the photographs act both to unify as well as divide depending upon the viewer’s perspective.

Panel Discussion: “Photography as a Vehicle for Empathy: Images as Living Representations of the Experience of Others”

March 7, 2019, 6 pm

Panel Participants:
Susan Goldstein, Benjamin Rasmussen, Kristin Hatgi Sink, Roddy MacInnes
Panel Moderator: Simon Zalkind, The Art Gallery at the Fulginiti curator

“By its nature, photography can function as either art or document or both. From its early almost universal embrace as a “true” representation of persons and events, photography has – probably more so than any other medium – been used to evoke empathy in viewers…The panelists will explore how and why the photograph has such a unique role in both empathic response and activist practice.”
