Grand Opening, Pop-Up Exhibit and Party!
Please join us at 6:00 p.m. on January 12, 2018 for the Grand Opening of the new Magnolia Street Art Space! The space is finished, artists are getting settled in and a pop-up exhibit, entitled "Emerge," representing work from more than 20 artists will be part of the celebration. There will also be food, music and fun! Don't miss this great opportunity to view some fantastic art and to take a look at this beautiful new art space.
As we all know, the denver metro arts community has been experiencing a huge pricing crunch. The Magnolia Street Art Space addresses those concerns now and for the future by offering affordable and permanent art space in the quaint location of downtown Derby, developed by Jeanie Nuanes King. Ms. King was one of the founders of the Art District on Santa Fe and owned a building there for many years. The pricing crunch made it difficult for Ms. King to continue operating an art venue in Denver that offered economical space for art studios and galleries, so she looked elsewhere to find a space that could be updated and made affordable for Denver Metro artists. Another nearby building is being turned into gallery and studio spaces by long time Denver photographer and art activist, Mark Sink. King and Sink have created a new center for the arts in the area -- the Derby Art District (DAD). Plans are for other nearby buildings to be renovated into additional art spaces. This new art district not only provides great opportunities for artists, but also emphasizes the important goal of becoming an integral part of the Derby Business District and community. The DAD aims to add cultural interest within the community without taking away the small town charm that makes Derby unique. DAD is partnering with various government and private community organizations to help facilitate this goal. In a recent article for the Commerce City Sentinel, Ms. King stated that she feels "the Derby area has been forgotten, left out when it comes to cultural opportunities; and that the art district is something special that the Derby community deserves and will be proud of."
