FotoFest is an international non-profit photographic arts and education organization, based in Houston, Texas. The program was founded in 1983 to promote the exchange of art and ideas through international programs and the presentation of photographic art. As part of FotoFest’s internationally known Biennial, FotoFest, sponsors the Meeting Place where photographers take part in portfolio reviews with international curators, publishers and writers. The Discoveries of the Meeting Place exhibition becomes the showcase for the best work discovered at the previous Biennial portfolio review. Since its founding in 1996 the Discoveries exhibitions have traveled to Brazil, Russia, Mexico and throughout the United States. The 2012 exhibition features the work of ten artists from around the globe – Lamia Maria Abillama, Damion Berger, Erika Diettes, Natan Dvir, Pablo Gimenez Zapiola, Bill McCullough, Nancy Newberry, Jhinryung Oh, and Michael Tummings. Their photographs have a breadth of subject matter that ranges from images of women of privilege in Rio De Janeiro, religious rituals in Israel, remnants of the “disappeared” in Colombia, to Texas cheerleaders, projections of poems on freight trains, and hunters in the forests in Germany. The works also represent diverse genres of photographic processes.
